Why an international wire gets held, and what releases it

Almost every held wire we have seen was released. What varied was how long it took, and that was decided by how quickly somebody answered properly.

This page explains the mechanism in general terms. A specific held transfer is a matter for the institutions holding it and for your advisers, and speed matters. Contact the desk at Miami Dossier for the current position on any building we cover.

The Short Answer

A hold is a request for information.

When an international transfer is held, an institution somewhere in the chain has a question it is required to resolve before releasing the funds. It is not a judgment about you and it is very rarely a refusal.

The chain has several points at which this can happen: your sending bank, a correspondent bank in between, the receiving bank, and the escrow agent. Any of them can pause.

The resolution is almost always the same: a clear written answer with documents attached, provided quickly.

What Triggers A Review

Six common causes, all mundane.

Size relative to the account. A transfer far larger than anything the account has done before prompts a look. Telling your bank in advance largely removes this.

A new relationship. A recently opened account sending a large sum has no pattern to be consistent with.

Incomplete payment details. A missing reference, an unclear beneficiary or a purpose field left blank generates a query on its own.

Name mismatches. The sender name not matching the account name, or the beneficiary details not matching the escrow account exactly, will stop a payment. Escrow instructions should be followed character by character.

A jurisdiction requiring extra scrutiny. Some routes attract additional review as a matter of policy. This is about the corridor, not about you.

Sanctions and watchlist screening. Automated screening produces false positives on common names, and clearing one is a matter of confirming identity.

What Actually Releases It

Speed, completeness and one point of contact.

Answer in writing, fully, on the first attempt. Partial answers produce second rounds, and each round costs days. Attach the documents rather than describing them.

Deal with the institution that has the question. A hold at your sending bank is not resolved by calling the escrow agent, and the reverse is also true. Establish who is holding it and speak to them.

Have your source of funds folder ready. If it is already assembled, most holds are resolved within a day or two. If it is not, the same hold can take weeks.

Keep the contract timeline visible. If a deposit deadline is approaching, your attorney should know immediately. Deadlines can often be managed when raised early and are much harder to manage once missed.

How To Structure A Transfer So This Does Not Happen

Five habits that prevent most holds.

Tell your bank before you send, including the amount, the destination and the purpose. This is the single most effective step available to you.

Confirm escrow instructions directly with the escrow agent, by voice, with a contact you have verified independently. Follow them exactly.

Send from an account in your own name where possible, and if you cannot, explain the arrangement in advance rather than letting it be discovered.

Complete the purpose and reference fields properly. Vagueness invites questions.

Consider whether a first smaller transfer to establish the corridor is useful in your case. Sometimes it is, sometimes it is an unnecessary step, and it is worth asking.

A Note On Fraud

The one risk that is not administrative.

Real estate closing funds are a standing target for wire fraud, typically through fraudulent instructions sent from a compromised or spoofed email account. The instructions look correct and the timing looks plausible.

The protection is procedural and it is not optional: verify wire instructions by voice with a contact you obtained independently, before sending, every time. Treat any change of instructions, any urgency and any request to redirect funds as suspect until confirmed the same way.

This is the one place where an extra call is always worth making. Everybody legitimate in this process expects you to make it.

The Perspective Worth Keeping

Held is not refused.

A hold feels alarming, particularly at distance and particularly against a contract deadline. In practice it is a question, and questions with good answers get answered.

The buyers who move through this smoothly are not the ones with simple finances. They are the ones who prepared, who answer fully and fast, and who have somebody on the ground helping them find the right person to talk to.

If a transfer of yours is held, the useful next step is to identify who is holding it and what they have asked for. Everything else follows from that.

The Shift

Prevention is a phone call. Resolution is a document.

Telling your bank in advance prevents most holds, and an assembled source of funds folder resolves most of the rest within days. Contact the desk at Miami Dossier and we will help you sequence a transfer so the question does not arise, and connect you with counsel if one is already in progress.

Which institutions are used to this. Banks, title companies and lenders that handle foreign buyers routinely rather than occasionally.
The deposit schedule. Proportions and trigger dates, which differ by project and sometimes by phase.
Where the timing pressure actually sits. Which step in your particular case needs to start first.
Where we would not proceed. Sometimes the answer is another building. Sometimes it is not now.

Common Questions

What buyers ask about held transfers

My wire is being held. Does that mean it will be rejected?
Usually not. A hold is a request for information, and most are released once a full written answer with documents is provided. Identify which institution has the question and respond to that one.
How long does a hold take to clear?
It depends almost entirely on how quickly a complete answer is provided. Buyers with documentation already assembled frequently resolve holds in a day or two.
Can I send funds from someone else’s account?
It complicates matters and will be questioned. If it is unavoidable, disclose the arrangement in advance to the escrow agent and your attorney rather than letting it surface during screening.
What if a deposit deadline passes while my funds are held?
Tell your attorney as soon as the hold occurs rather than when the deadline arrives. Deadlines are frequently manageable when raised early.
How do I avoid wire fraud?
Verify wire instructions by voice with a contact obtained independently, before sending, every time, and treat any change of instructions or urgency as suspect until confirmed the same way.
